Ploegsteert's infrastructure renewal... a success story.

16/01/2008

using Microsoft Server 2003 and Exchange 2007 (an uptime - Microsoft reference)

Ploegsteert helps its customers a lot quicker thanks to the completely renewed ICT-infrastructure.

The Project
The three companies Steenbakkerijen van Ploegsteert, Ceratec and Ceratec Electrotechnics are all part of the same group and have a central location in the South-West-Belgian municipality Ploegsteert.
The IT departments installed servers from several hardware vendors in each of the three locations during the past few years. The software that worked on these servers was outdated and out of support, and the speed and performance of the servers was to low; resulting in end-users who had to wait a lot to perform their daily jobs.
That’s why the IT team decided to renew the complete server infrastructure and to integrate Microsoft Windows Server 2003 on the new hardware, which allows the users to work much faster.
In addition the 3 firms also migrated to Windows Exchange Server 2007 for the management of their emails, agenda’s, contacts and tasks. The employees, who are resided in foreign countries, now have the possibility to access their company mail trough the internet.

The challenge
The group wanted the same servers for the 3 companies, who host the faster software of Microsoft.
This also had to simplify the administrative task for the IT staff.
Another challenge was the ability to offer mail availability trough the internet for the complete group.

The solution
Uptime installed 6 new physic DELL-servers at Ploegsteert, on which 15 virtual machines work.
All these machines work with Microsoft Windows Server 2003. This also offers the advantage of faster search and save actions for documents.
Thanks to Microsoft Office Exchange Server 2007, Ploegsteert has webmail accessibility from now on.
